For Solo Organ
This is an unusual piece for an instrument with an unusual stop: the Shofar. Skinner Op. 638 was originally built for a synagogue in Mt. Vernon, NY and many years later reinstalled in a church in which I was working at the time. At the suggestion of the tonal finisher, I wrote a piece specifically for the Shofar stop, which it needed not only due to its unusual character, but also due to its limited 13-note compass. Playing the Shofar against the Clarinet, this piece makes an apposite twist on the standard trumpet tune. Although written for Shofar, it can, of course, be applied to any sufficient reed stop.
